Out: XX DROP: ABADONED

Agents:
Jon Gunleiksrud
Finn Bjørn Johansen

"On the morning of the 5th January 1042, two aircraft were detailed to fly to Wick, with prosperous to operate from there, on Operation ANVIL/LARK, one a/c by W/C Farley and the other by Sgt Jones, Weather conditions were very bad, and the operation was abadoned."

AIR-27-956-1_1 p 25

The 5th of January saw the repositioning of two Whitleys together with their passengers at Wick for W/Cdr Farley and Sgt Jones to fly ANVIL/LARK to Norway. This airfield was one of the most northern on mainland Scotland, the north west tip, and used to shorten the flight to Norway. However, the weather became so bad that the operation was abandoned and they returned to Stradishall. Later Kinloss and Lossiemouth became the starting points for Norwegian operations.

Agents by Moonlight, Freddie Clark.

"Bad weather closed in and it was not until the 5th that Farley and Jones were ordered to take their two Whitleys to Wick on the north-eastern tip of Scotland for an operation named 'AnviI/Lark'. They took their passengers with them, the idea being to use an advanced base for the next Norwegian operation to cut down the flying time. However, the bad weather persisted and the operation was cancelled."

Flights of the forgotten, K A Merrick
