SECRET 57B 15 COPYRef.S./M 380. Subject: Norwegian Refugees.
To:- Lt.Col. J.H.Adam, G.S.
P.O.Box 500,
OXFORD.
Dear Colonel Adam,
As I am in rather a quandary about sendin a certain matter forward to you, I thought that the best a and quickest to do so was to send it via R.A.F; to DYCE, thence ELLMAN and ask him to sent it to you as rapidly as possible.
The subject matter is one brass container which was brought over by Bjarne THORSEN on the M/V "DUEN" which has just arrive SUMBURGH 23.00hrs 24.l0.41.) ex BREMNES, Norway.
The bearer was most persistent in asking us to have this forwarded to LONDON as soon as possible. I had a talk with MITCHELL about it and it would appear to be a keyword for a code to be used on England - Norway transmissions by the Norwegians. The bearer says that his orders to bring this over emanated from Norwegian officers in BERGEN, and that his own superiors have been arrested. Whether this is true or not is not for me to say, but as there is a doubt and as the natter may be genuinely urgent, I am sending it by the a/m method and hope it is correct.
Please acknowledge receipt of this brass container which has the man's name scratched thereon and also bears my initials.
Yours sincerely,
Sgd. Vere.J,V.HUNT, Captain(141141), Assistant Security Officer, No. 2 Protected Area.
Lerwick 25.10.41.
Letter written 25.10.41 from RN HQ Lerwick HS2-231-p21.
TO: AD/S From S. 6th. November 1941The attached papers are a translation from the Norwegian miniature photographs which were recently brought over from Bergen by a refugee called Thorson. The photographs were concealed in a bolt-shaped brass cylinder. After considerable delay it was finally discovered that the paper3 were intended for to whom they have been passed after translation,
[Rognes] is not aware that the cylinder was opened by S.O.E.
The paragraphs on the attached paper marked in red may possibly be of interest as offering an indication that
a) C's organisation and the Military Organization in Bergen appear to be crossing lines in very much the same way as they did in Trondheim at an earlier date.
